Hello! I am Melissa Romain, a licensed social worker with over 18 years of experience in the behavioral health field. I have worked in outpatient counseling and residential treatment settings and enjoy working with individuals who are looking to learn more about themselves and gain insight into their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. I have worked with individuals who have experienced depression, anxiety, trauma and abuse or neglect, substance use, parenting issues, and adjustment issues as well. I attended graduate school at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and currently teach as an adjunct instructor there as well. My approach to working with clients is strengths based and client centered. I am trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, psychodynamic theory, and Trauma Informed Care. I believe that we are all the developers of our own path and my job is to help individuals develop skills and insight into how to make the best decisions for themselves each day. Outside of being a therapist, I'm a dog mom to a 17 year old Pomeranian named Stanley and I enjoy yoga, kickboxing and weight lifting as my regular means of self care. I am currently only working limited weekend hours so please know that when looking to schedule. I look forward to working with you!

Hello! I’m David Affolter, I have been helping people most of my adult life. It just seems that has been a major motivation for me. After college and service in the Air Force, I really was confronted with the reality that I needed to choose a direction in life. I made a decision that it had to be something that would bring me lasting satisfaction. I would feel good about myself. I became a high school teacher and coach, and I loved doing that for almost twenty years. I experienced the joy of seeing young people do things they thought they couldn’t ever do. In my teaching, I always seemed to be drawn to the students who seemed like they were struggling to find their way. Students came to me for someone to listen to them and help them find their way. I have the joy today of keeping in touch via social media, and I watching as they grow their own families and follow their own path. After those teaching years and my own daughters moved on to college and adult life, I felt the urge to keep helping people, but I felt moved to go into counseling. With the support of my wife, I completed a graduate/professional degree in Community Counseling at The University of Akron in 1994 and became a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Ohio and am also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida. It really was a smooth transition, and I have learned that a significant part of counseling is giving people new information and perspectives and helping them decide where they want to go and how to get there. I have continued now for over twenty years in helping people deal with a variety of problems in their lives, and the large majority are able to feel good about themselves and able to move in the direction they choose. I have learned how life has wounded people and how to help them heal from those wounds. I have seen people who thought their lives were over but have learned in therapy how to build new ways of being and living that lead them to new destinations—destinations that many never thought they would arrive at in the beginning. I know when I reflect on my own journey over the past fifty years or so, I am amazed at the variety of things life has brought my way, and the lessons I have learned along the way. It is a very humbling experience watching people gain the courage to change and move forward in ways they never believed they could. If this kind of experience is something that you believe would be helpful to you, then you are in the right place. I can join you on your journey and help you find your way to your new destination—a new way of looking at yourself, a new career path, finding new friends, or finding a new spirituality to give new meaning and purpose to your life. I look forward to assisting you on your journey to your new destination!

I'm a clinical psychologist licensed in Ohio with seven years of experience providing psychotherapy for a wide range of concerns. My experience includes working with individuals who have concerns with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorders, personality disorders, histories of trauma, PTSD, and interpersonal difficulties. I identify primarily with a cognitive behavioral approach, but incorporate skills from a variety of therapeutic orientations. Treatment can sometimes feel robotic, and I want to make sure that my clients are able to experience the opposite. People deserve a compassionate and caring therapist who meets them where they are. I believe that clients are the experts on their own experiences and I work to empower them so that they can create the changes they want to see in their lives. Taking the first step or trying again with therapy is incredibly difficult. Choosing a therapist that will be the best for your needs can also be hard. I am happy to discuss your expectations and desires for treatment and help you navigate more easily through this time. I look forward to working with you!

I believe every person has a story, and every story has purpose. Your experiences matter. Who you are matters. We all have things that become obstacles, but it is when those obstacles interfere with our ability to live each day to its fullest that we need support to address them. I have worked with all people of all ethnicities, religious affiliations, ages, and states of health to address anxiety, depression, and stressful social dynamics. I provide a safe non-judgmental space to share what is in your heart, and work together to process that into actionable steps for improving daily life, in whatever way that means for you. I have used motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, Labyrinth work and guided imagery as specialized ways to uncover and process emotions and issues.

I also have a clinical license in Substance Use Disorder. I have over 20 years of experience with mental health and substance abuse. My experience has taught me to ask you what happened instead of what's wrong. My various therapy styles include: Cognitive Behavioral, Client Centered, Couples Therapy and Integrated Trauma Treatment. The past 10 years have afforded me the privilege of working with veterans who have suffered with chronic homelessness as a result of untreated substance use and/or mental health issues like PTSD. It is my pleasure to introduce myself to you as you explore provider and service options. My name is Annie Bennett and I am a Ohio licensed clinical social worker and supervisor. I received my master’s degree from the University of KY and then completed two years of conjoint marital and family therapy training. Although I have spent time in academia teaching in the social work graduate department at the University of KY, most of my experience over the past thirty plus years has been in the field of addiction, primarily working with women. Of course, this experience encompasses mental/emotional health and partner/family issues. For ten years I worked in an alcohol and other drug long-term residential treatment program where women could bring their children 12 years of age and younger. My therapy style would be a combination of cognitive behavioral, humanistic, and solution focused. I have found it important to meet clients where they are and help them work toward where they want to be. I believe in transformation, which is why I am in this field. I made major life changes myself over thirty years ago with the help of therapy and support from my environment. It is work and it is not easy, but most of the time it is well worth the effort. The important thing to know is that we do not have to be alone with our problems. I am working on a part-time basis but can usually respond within a couple of days to requests. My online schedule is posted. These sessions are 45 minutes, and the frequency of our visits will be determined by the progress you feel you are making in our sessions. I generally check messages everyday Monday through Thursday and respond as quickly as I can. I do appreciate your patience when it takes a bit longer at times, as I may be tending to other clients or professional/personal responsibilities. Please remember that BetterHelp is not appropriate if you are in crisis or in immediate need of support. In crisis situations, please call 911 or local emergency services. You can also call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to talk to someone right away! Working with others and seeing them make progress gives me great satisfaction. Having spent time on a sailboat I like the following metaphor: “You can’t change the winds, but you can adjust your sails”. I look forward to helping you achieve the quality of life you desire and deserve.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Some commonly asked questions can be found below.

How much does a therapist cost?

Mental health professionals can differ in price. Forbes found that the average cost of in-person therapy in the US is around $100 to $200 per hour. Pricing can also vary based on your location.

BetterHelp offers payment plans of $60 to $90 per session, charged monthly in a lump sum. You can also take advantage of this pricing on one of BetterHelp's sister platforms, like ReGain for couples or TeenCounseling for teens aged 13 to 19.

Many therapists may be upfront about their pricing and whether or not they take health insurance from the beginning. Additionally, some in your area may offer a sliding scale plan to allow those with lower incomes to pay less for therapy. However, services online can often save individuals a few hundred dollars per month.

How do I know if I should get a therapist?

Mental health services and mental health providers may help you navigate various concerns. You do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy; You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general advice. A counselor may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Mental health issues don't always present as a crisis. Many professionals provide talk therapy and support for life transitions, skills learning, relationship problems, or life coaching. Online therapy sessions in Ohio can allow clients seeking therapy to experience professional help through video, phone, or live chat sessions without commuting to an office.

Does insurance cover therapy?

Different counseling services can vary in cost. Therapists must apply to accept insurance through insurance companies, which may take time and money, so not every therapist offers services through insurance. If you cannot find a therapist that accepts your plan, BetterHelp may be cheaper than visiting an in-person therapist.

Is online therapy safe?

Online therapy through BetterHelp and its sister platforms is safe. Therapists are licensed, experienced, and vetted before being contracted with the platform. If you experience any concerns with your therapist, you change your counselor through the platform or app at any time.
